Feed your monsters. One gem is awarded for every 25,000 food items given to your monsters. For five million Food feds, you will receive 10 gems.
To have friends. Players get 10 gems for 100 friends.
An easy way to get gems is to watch videos in Monsterwood. All you have to do is watch a couple of ads and free gems will appear in your chest. However, Monsterwood is not available to new players, so you will need to purchase the second island to access it.

Gems are also awarded for logging into the game every day.
